Taupo Lakes and Streams

Taupo has 365 days of excellent fishing and although during the winter months the upper sections of some rivers are closed to help the trout to move through during winter spawning, there is always somewhere you can throw a line.

The Tongariro River is world famous for Brown and Rainbow trout. If you have ever fished a river with all the runs and pools named then you can imagine why people come from all over just to fish here. It is more regarded as New Zealand's major Steelhead fishery because of the shear size of Lake Taupo. Trout were introduced here around 120 years ago and have sustained huge numbers ever since, with approximately 750,000 trout spawning up it each year. The Tongariro River can be found just 35 minutes drive from Taupo and on the way you pass just as famous streams and rivers like the Waitahanui and the Tauranga-Taupo making for plenty of action should the appetite need to be attended to.

The stunning Lake Taupo region is a true angler’s paradise and Cruise & Fish can take you fly fishing here on a personalised, unique fly fishing adventure. Just contact us for more information about the possibilities and to discuss your requirements. We will make it a trip to remember!

With a surface area of 62,000 hectares (152,000 acres) Lake Taupo is the largest Lake in the Oceania. It was formed approximately 27,000 years ago during a series of volcanic eruptions with the largest one (Oruanui) being the worlds largest in the past 70,000 years! More recently, in approximately 180 A.D the Hatepe Eruption was so large it turned the sky red over China and Rome. This sent a column twice as high as Mt. St. Helens and is considered as the largest eruption in the past 5,000 years.
