We provide all your fishing gear need, but you are welcome to bring your own

What type of Fly Rods are best?

5 or 6 weight are typically used, anywhere between 9 > 10 foot being ideal. You may wish to use a 7 weight on windy days or if you’re winter fishing for steelhead on the Tongariro.

For rivers and streams, 5 or 6 weight are typically used, and between 9 > 10 foot being ideal. You may wish to use a 7 weight on windy days or if you’re winter fishing on larger rivers like the Tongariro.

What type of Reels are best?

Answer:

Large Arbor reels are great and reels that it have a good quality drag system. Invest in the best you can afford, as it may just be the difference that lands you that fish of a lifetime. Reels should to be spooled with a minimum 50 meters of backing.

What are the recommended leaders & tippets?

Answer:

Because of the water clarity, long leaders are recommended – 12 or 13 foot 8lb (3x) tapered leaders are ideal. And 3X, 4X & 5X are the most versatile tippet strengths for most situations in New Zealand.

What type of wadding gear is best?

Answer:

The NZ government has banned the use of felt soled wadding boots. We recommend you use studded rubber soled boots.

Gore-Tex type waders are ideal for early/late season. In the warmer summer months most Kiwis wade wet. Quick dry polyester/nylon pants work extremely well, as does a pair of lightweight nylon shorts over polypropylene tights and your boots.
